Early Monday morning, a man sustained serious injuries after his truck was struck from behind by an impaired driver, then careened into a tree. This occurred on Waters Avenue around 2:45 a.m., as confirmed by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. The victim was pinned inside his Dodge Ram and had to be rescued by emergency services.
The driver of the sedan, identified as 33-year-old Howard Cruz Denis, showed signs of impairment following the crash. Subsequent to a DUI investigation conducted at the scene, deputies arrested and charged Cruz Denis with DUI with serious bodily injury. Found with serious lower leg injuries, the victim was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, as reported by WFLA and confirmed by WTSP.
Body camera footage from the arrest, highlighting the severity of the impact to the truck, was shared online revealing the damaged truck with its front crushed and the driverโs side door bent grotesquely. This visual evidence offers a stark perspective on the force of the collision caused by Cruz Denis’ reckless action.
Sheriff Chad Chronister issued a dire warning about impaired driving in a statement obtained by FOX 13, stating, “This crash is a stark reminder of the dangers of impaired driving.” He continued, “Driving under the influence is a choice that puts lives at risk. We are thankful the victim is expected to recover, and we urge everyone to make responsible decisions to keep our roads safe.” Found at high speed, Cruz Denis reportedly crashed into the victim’s truck, propelling it against the tree.
With the combined efforts of the deputies and emergency workers, the injured man was extricated from his vehicle and is expected to recover from his injuries. Meanwhile, Cruz Denis awaits the consequences of his actions, as law enforcement continues to caution against impaired driving and its potentially devastating outcomes.
